Lehmann Maupin would like to announce an exhibition of new paintings by Pedro Barbeito. For this exhibition at Lehmann Maupin, Barbeito has created a new body of work that refers to the history of painting and its future. These investigations of art historical forms and ideas through the use of modern tools allow for these references to appear in his work.

For this exhibition Pedro Barbeito has created a series of intimate paintings each involving a dialogue between the subjects both literally and metaphorically. While the forms mutate from representation to abstraction, from being solid to dissolving into space and the confrontation between the figures shifts from endearing to violent, each work parallels the narrative that painting has endured as it has evolved. With these paintings, Barbeito uses the computers imaging abilities to execute and contemporize the formal planning and drawing of a cubist space, as well as to further the dialogue between figuration and abstraction.

Pedro Barbeito was born in La Coruña, Spain and received his MFA in painting from Yale University. His work has been exhibited at the Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art, Museo Rufino Tamayo in Mexico City, Whitechapel Art Gallery in London, and Exit Art among others. He lives and works in New York City.
