The Armory Show 2007
Booth 604
February 22 - 26, 2007540 West 26th Street
Press Release
Lehmann Maupin Gallery will present new works by Kutlug Ataman, Christian Hellmich, Tony Oursler and Mr., at The Armory Show, on view from 23 through 26 February 2007, at Pier 94, New York.Coinciding with his exhibition at Lehmann Maupin Gallery, Tony Oursler will present wall sculptures that directly relate to his works on paper. With these sculptures, Oursler continues to employ sculpture, video, performance and painting in innovative ways while exploring the ways media affects the human psyche.
Turkish Delight, a new film by Kutlug Ataman, represents the first time the artist has turned the camera on himself. In this piece, he has created a semi-fictitious portrait as an artist and more importantly a Turkish artist. Ataman dresses as a traditional belly dancer and performs to a Turkish gypsy song. This portrait also touches on stereotypical notions of the Western world’s view of Turkey.
In May, the Japanese artist Mr. will have his first exhibition in New York at Lehmann Maupin Gallery. As a preview, a special installation will be on view at The Armory Show booth. Mr. examines Otaku culture through sculpture, painting and drawing, with cartoonish, anime-like representations of children often in provocative situations.
A new series of paintings by Christian Hellmich will also be on view. The dilapidated buildings, empty stairwells and anonymous stations of his paintings do not attempt to tell a story. Instead, he is more engaged by the organization and act of painting itself through form, surface, color and its absence.
